HALAWA (KHNL)- This is the Ice Palace. And if you like to ice skate in the 808, this is pretty much your only option as far as venue. If you’re that rarest of local athletes, that makes hockey you’re sport of choice, this is where you have to be.

There are 2 words that just do not go together, hockey and Hawaii. But here in the Ice Palace, they go together nicely.

“Once you get introduced to it, you can’t help but love it.”, says local hockey player Joe Kinoshita.

Ice hockey is a sport that you might think would have no following in the islands. But you’d be wrong.

“I’ve played a lot of sports, football, basketball, i’ve surfed.” says Joe, “Nothing really incorporates the speed, power, grace even if you want to say that hockey does.”

And with this being the only frozen pond in hawaii, by default, Hawaii’s hockey community is close knit.

Ice palace manager Spencer says, “The hockey community is real small. And everyone gets along. Plays hockey and has a few beers at the bar.”

But we’re not talking about weekend hackers. These guys take their hockey seriously.

The guys that grew up in hawaii playing street hockey are really good. So the talent level is pretty good. We’ve got a lot of islanders out there that are really good at in-line. Easy transition over, you’ll love it.

And when he says, you’ll love hockey, he means, you will love hockey!

The best I always describe it is, if you’ve never played hockey, sex is as good as it gets. I mean this is it you know.

I don’t know if hockey is that good, but it does have some off ice benefits.

It says right here, according to playboy magazine, which I read just for the articles, that hockey players make great lovers.
